Over the past five years, Concordia University in Irvine, CA has informally collaborated with four Houston-area LCMS churches to provide worship arts leadership coaching and networking for college-age students and worship ministry professionals already serving in the church. Through large and small group interactive experiences onsite at local Lutheran churches in the Houston, Texas area, these participants observed and discussed the contextual worship practices of each church and the deep intentionality behind all that they do, affording everyone the opportunity to consider how God has gifted them, and what He has called them to be as leaders of worship. This unique partnership has provided a growth experience for an abundance of Concordia-Irvine students and LCMS worship leaders around the country, and created an event that is eagerly anticipated each year.
Because this event had produced strong collegial relationships each year that promoted such an open environment of support and learning, six worship leader participants decided that we would make a rigorous effort to shape and expand our experience into something that would benefit more people, in more ways. From it the Worship Arts Leadership Institute (WALi) was conceived and organized into what we pray will be a blessing to you as well as us.
